Blue Eyes, Blue Eggs, Lost Love

Blue Eyes, Blue Eggs, Lost Love

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(Diamonds and Rust) Joan Baez, Bob Dylan romance

"
joannie struck a chord
sang the saddest of songs
of a revisiting ghost
when the moon was full

she sang about bobbie
in soulful soprano voice
diamonds and rust, lost love
a haunting of sorts

she sang that his blue eyes
were bluer than robins eggs
i remember those eyes
knew it to be true

and though i had never seen
a robin's egg, one was hidden
for sure in a nest in the ivy
outside our back door

for the robin  diligently
entered with juicy grubs
when it was safe to do so
when no one was looking

until one morning i found
on the unforgiving ground
a fledgling, pathetic
cold in its half made vest

i watched the distress
of the returning bird
heard its anguish
saw it take off for good

my thoughts caught joannie
was she pushed from the nest
or did she fly away
of her own accord

soulful, heartwarming and sad... your words flow like a song dear Chris, I don't know details about Joan and Dylan but from your poem I feel as they did love each others but couldn't always stay together, more like loving the state of their love rather than loving each others closely.

Chris,
When we pay attention to the little things that intrude on our consciousness, especially the traumas of life, we are expanded, and not just for the moment. Your robin gave all it had, and it was not enough... a truism that speaks to every life. Hospice workers often report that their patients regret more the things undone than the mistakes they made... and we never really know the full consequences of the our actions.

Thank you Thomas.
This is just marvelous. Outstanding. The first record album I ever bought was one by Peter, Paul, and Mary. The second was Joan Baez/5. I've always loved her, and still do. She was just recently on stage at the famous "Newport Folk Festival"--a place where she and Bob reigned queen and king through much of the sixties. I love the birds analogies used--they fit so well. Now I shall pick up my guitar and play "Diamonds and Rust".
