On The Far Side Of The Horizon

On The Far Side Of The Horizon

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(from a friend's photograph)

"
gift me a horizon at days end
where a fireball sun is sinking fast
between silhouettes of scented pine

where my view is divided in two
dark chocolate shadow submerges
all lower ground while on high

swimming in a warm summer sky
runny with orange blossom honey
thickly spread and set

a solitary avian friend soars
a pin prick in a vast ocean expanse
carry my thoughts on feathered wings

as i ponder on the persecuted
in far off lands who no doubt
hear the call of freedom singing

how many stare at the setting sun
elsewhere on our unequal earth
dreaming their chance too will come

where they leave behind family
friends, all they have ever known
to grow in more fruitful soil

This was beautiful and had me thinking of the sunsets I have seen here lately, there have been some gorgeous end of day scenes staring me in the face as I drive home from work. However...the final stanza of this thru me off a bit, though I can see some wanting nothing more than to ride off into the sunset but leaving family and friends behind. I guess so, just not me. Love the painting you did here with your words Chris.

Beautiful poem. A lasting imagery. Well expressed and written. "how many stare at the setting sun

Such a relevant poem on today's times...every verse is a beautiful thought and holds its own incandescence....yes, it's a scene that would invoke the deepest thought and empathy in us towards our fellow human beings existing in beyond sad places on this unequal earth. Your portrayal is effortless, strong and masterful. Kudos Chris!

I really enjoyed the turn here from sunsts to longings of immigrants. A fine example of what poetry should be.

Like you, Chris, I love sunsets. Just recently I saw one that took my breath away. I was only sorry that I didn't have a camera with me to capture its beauty. It's a shame that because of so many horrid things going on in many peoples' lives, they don't have the time or capacity to appreciate so much of nature's beauty. I'm glad that you do.
Take care - Dave

as much as I enjoy travelling, I dont think I could ever settle anywhere else .. well not for long anyway, and get this, I think it may have something to do with the sunsets .. oh' and other stuff as well I suppose, but our sunsets sure do rival anything I have seen anywhere .. please excuse the tangent, I got carried away while my thoughts migrated ..
