Famous Last Words

Famous Last Words

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(there is more than an element of truth in these words)

"
darling can you remember
can you remember when
you couldn't make the effort
all those years ago

when I found myself
in the delivery room prematurely
while you preferred pissing
it up with your friends

can you recall the shock when
at eight o'clock the following day
you found out you were a father
rather embarrassing eh

and I don't suppose for one
moment you noticed the look
of dismay on my face
when you did arrive

to gift me with those famous words
not how are you my dearest love
but a necklace of turds in my opinion
after all the pain I had gone through

puking up alone, frightened,
unsupported you asked me why
yes you asked me why I hadn't
birthed you a son and from that
very second my dear I knew we were
finished, we were undone

A necklace of turds??? &?
You certainly reminded me not to scorn a woman. 😀
Do girls get some secret class boys don't know about, where they learn how to win every argument and are given an encyclopedia of putdowns, or does it just come naturally? 😀
Made me think of my own Mums simmering eyes, where lips were superglued until further notice and the ensuing silence showed him the error of his ways.
I always remember that lesson as silence being golden... But don't ya just know it, I ended up growing up and becoming one of THEM, a man 😀
You knew you were finished suggests he was too drunk to notice the alarm bells and klaxons of silence that was deafening to everyone else.

oooh, i relate to this so well Chris, the midwife calling downstairs to tell my husband our 3rd born was about to arrive and him not coming ... saying he had seen it all before :( ... the beginning of the end and oddly enough she never did relate to him after she was born.
No wonder women are the stronger sex, they have to be lol.

This is quiet rough but also very refreshing at your writing. That second stanza is really chilling . When we need more support and sutendly our loved one just simple don't care . That's really heart breaking. I find at English language if you wanna be rude you don't have to use rude words. It's enough to use some famous phrase at certain situation. That last stanza is also heart breaking when just birth son can bring joy but if is a daughter father is not just so please. This poem was for me quite masterpiece of human emotions and experiences. You was able to blend together sad moments of your life But it's have very nice form to read.

Some things you don't forget. A thing of the past, just like him. Thank you

Chris
and i would hope these were the last words the speaker said to the subject of this poem and she left him in the dust of the hospital room...
Just the times when others are needed most...they think only of themselves.
