A Poem by Chris Shaw

cupped within maternal palms
i hold the remnants of a
toddlers first steps

a tiny pair of black patent
soft shiny shoes
with eye catching buttons
at the end of slender
elasticated straps

vamp embellished swirls
of fine white stitching
stem style neat

remembering her face
soft brushed wispy curls
wide eyed surprise

she took off with speed
amid eagerness to please
before little legs crumbled
and she stumbled backwards
on to a well cushioned
derriere

Awww...this was such a sweet reading experience. With your words, I could see the tiny tot so clearly and they have those pretty shoes, that they’re so thrilled with and proudly show off. And with that new-found confidence, they’re raring to go but the little legs are not yet so adept and hence the fall. No matter though, they’ll be veterans in no time. This is how life teaches those yet untouched. Such a brilliant metaphor, my friend.

As always, your lovely, descriptive pen and the superb thought content is unmatched! Kudos on this gem, my friend!

I loved it!
This is the ultimate description of how a pair of old baby shoes can bring it all back . . . and when you bring it back, you do so with a flourish! I totally see the scurry & feel the squeal as this one lurches ahead & then bounces backside . . . perfect details in word splashes of familiarity. I'm not even into kids & this one melted my heart! We moved about this time last year, and when I was packing, it hit me how many little reminders of those early days I had kept of my children’s. My daughter’s first pair of shoes are something I feel sure I’ll never be able to let go. I asked myself when I was packing what I would, ultimately, do with all the mementoes. I don’t have an answer, but reason doesn’t intercede in conversations of the sentimental. I just can’t let them go.

I love the way your poem takes one treasured item and shows how we respond to those things. How the memory itself feels part of the object and can take us back to a time that seems forever vivid in the mind. It’s a lovely journey. The little girl learning to walk opens up to all the other little milestones, and each of us finds a personal memory among the words.

Great poem, Chris. Always nice to revisit those early days of parenthood.

A wonderful poem dear Chris. The simple and easy days. I babysit my grandchildren for 11 years. I ensure I saw them fall and I saw them learn to run. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

What a lovely review Verse. Those little moments are so precious :)) Thank you.

My dear wife died eight years ago after we were together for forty-six years. I`m still finding mementos of our three kids tucked away in the back of drawers and in dusty boxes in the loft. They never get discarded - never will. These are the icons of love. Recently I found the tiny plaster caste my eldest son wore to stretch his foot ligaments when he took his first steps at 12 months old. Your poem is gorgeous, Christine Anne and will stay with you always.

Chris, this poem touches all, especially parents of adult children. It seems every time I find something from my daughter or son's childhood, I'm lost in a swirl of memories. This poem is warm, yet reminds us of age and the heart tug we feel when we hold such precious things in our hands. A fine poem, as always, Chris.
