Someone Else's Winter

Someone Else's Winter

A Poem by Chris Shaw

Why I had a sudden urge
to place a single rose
upon an unkempt grave
of a soul I didn't know,
came as a surprise
even to me.

So strong that tug on
heart strings as I passed by,
I had to stifle a cry
before moving on.

Though not before I left
behind, a part of me
in the shade of a grieving tree
and before I choked
on my own sadness.

The depth of emotion in this write is stunning! I have to say that when I visit the graves of loved ones, I often stop at a random stone....one that looks unvisited.....and wonder what sort of life that person had. Who did they leave behind and why is no one ever here to remember? You are such a compassionate soul, Chris. A beauty of a write. Lydi**

I like to think that each flower grown in todays world of death is a flower earmarked for the grave of someone lost. In fact, a flower is our only instance where the soul tries to make that human connection. Beautiful poetry and thanks for sharing it with us....dana

The enormity of each word made me swallow hard, and I found your title to be just as beautiful. Good to know I'm not the only one who feels this way!

A beautiful piece showing the pull grief can have on us, even for someone we don't know. Loved the work, hope to read more like this. :)

You must feel much as I do, and believe that those who are gone should not also be forgotten. This fine poem is a powerful and emotional statement to that fact. Now, if more in this world could have such empathy as you, it would be a better place.

Lovely to hear where your family rest Pat. So pleased you enjoyed my poem.

Suppressed grief, perhaps, at humanity's starkly desperate condition; an emotional recognition
of the blindness of our journey--the seeming finality of death.
Too many individuals quickly forgotten; indeed, if they were ever very much remembered.
Took a great soul to discern these things, and more.
Took a gifted artist to portray them, so movingly.

I try and stay away from graves as I'm sure they will be my resting place when I'm dead and gone. Your poem strikes at the heart of sadness!
