Someone Else's Winter

Someone Else's Winter

A Poem by Chris Shaw

Why I had a sudden urge
to place a single rose
upon an unkempt grave
of a soul I didn't know,
came as a surprise
even to me.

So strong that tug on
heart strings as I passed by,
I had to stifle a cry
before moving on.

Though not before I left
behind, a part of me
in the shade of a grieving tree
and before I choked
on my own sadness.

The depth of emotion in this write is stunning! I have to say that when I visit the graves of loved ones, I often stop at a random stone....one that looks unvisited.....and wonder what sort of life that person had. Who did they leave behind and why is no one ever here to remember? You are such a compassionate soul, Chris. A beauty of a write. Lydi**

This went straight to the heart. As our child was learning about death and expecting the passing of her ailing grandfather, we visited a cemetery, complete with flowers and short 'lectures.' It was still moving for all of us participating, even when we paid respects at some random person's grave. We all learned valuable lessons that day. And this beautiful poem envelopes all that and more. Thanks for having shared this gem. /Frederick.

On Memorial day weekend. I go on Saturday. Less people. I walk the graves and I thank the old soldiers who allowed me to know freedom. I understand the poem. Sometimes the heart knows more then we do. Hello dear Chris and thank you for sharing the amazing poetry and your thoughts.

A visit to the graveyard doesn't happen often for us except in circumstances unthinkable. Yet once long ago, on one such visit, I remember feeling sad and thinking about all who were buried and I contemplated on the life of each and every grave I came across so I feel your compassion and depression very clearly here and add to it your way of writing down your feelings is very moving. Anyone who reads this will stop, ponder over this poetry and go forth richer of feeling. Thank you.
