Once There Was Jam

Once There Was Jam

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(Honey fungus will wipe out with ease all soft fruit trees in it's path. A nightmare)

"
absent trees
remind me of my fruitless
autumn garden

pardon me for the resurrection
of our damson from cold ashes
or a greengage much mourned

soft mellow-yellow, bruised skins
abundantly ripe, oozing juice
sweet stickiness, a squelchy
mess on patio paving

permitted at times to rot
to drop from lofty heights
to attract unwanted attention
from nuisance wasps drowsy
in half drunken stupor

or a path stained with purple decay
forgive me while i pine little blots
of rotten fruit

all destroyed by creeping spread
of fine thread roots from
an unrepentant villain
no stopping honey fungus

What? No jam! Well that's bad enough, but I will lose the plot if it affects my marmalade. What am I meant to do now without Roses lemon n lime? This is the worst news since I grew up and realised curly wurlies were not the size of ladders like I once thought.
Breakfast will be mourned.
Methinks it's time to protest.

Love the decay that is left behind in the wake of this poem,
and, yes, I'd miss jam on toast in the mornings too.

"pardon me for the resurrection
of our damson from cold ashes
or a greengage much mourned" __ love this!

A lovely piece of writing, Christine.

Thank you!

My pleasure!
Mr. Darwin was right in saying nature is a struggle for existence. In this case the only winners seem to be the wasps, who got away with a cheap drunk.

Since I become emotionally involved with my trees, it's easy to get completely sucked into your tree drama, especially how you punch up gory details! Sloppy fruit dropping, attracting wasps, I was freakin out right there! I love trees, but you made me realize I don't like messy trees! It seems there are so many ways that trees can be blighted, even down to a lack of honey bees around here! Your scenario is so yukky, I felt the stinking jam between my toes! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I like ramblers. Good morning.

Yes we have one grow over a wall its called 'Wedding Day'
okay yes...this all seems like nature and something bad spreading and infecting everything else.

but i see allegory both in the sense of a disease spreading....or a mass killer just wiping out humanity...
the "unrepentant villain"--

and the ones that could help are drunk and apathetic...
