Tangerine Riot

Tangerine Riot

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

From the archives, and a bit off season :)

"
I buried tulip bulbs
this morning
beneath a bed of soil
in a terracotta container
only to find a grey squirrel
had got their first.

No doubt in the cruel months ahead
when he is hungry
and discovers his larder
empty of walnuts
he will become agitated

I don't wish to appear mean
but he has the whole length
of the garden and beyond
at his disposal

I have one container
in which I am planning
a tangerine riot in spring

In any case
he doesn't pay rent

This is cute, I have a squirrel in my yard that is kinda picky. I give him peanut butter sandwiches. He loves them, but I ran out of peanut butter, so I threw him some nuts and he throws them at my door. So I went and bought peanut butter and made the little brat peanut butter sandwich. Enjoyed your write.

Nicely done and yes they do love their bulbs, I have to return the ones found in my garden back to the neighbors, they can get expensive. They are sneaky and greedy, but cute. Loved the poem it made me smile.

i dislike grey squirrels , they are vermin and have killed off our beautiful natural red squirrels.

I did know a man who's house i visited near a woodland and they would take brazil nuts fro his hand , he couldn't touch them as they ran away to a safe distance until he held out his hand with some more ..

Indeed a sweet little 'ditty' with a very mean heart. Poor squirrel. I have many bird feeders and after trying to protect them from the squirrels I decided they should get a free lunch too! lol
Enjoyed this sweet little number which is well written in freeverse with lovely description and emotion. One typo in the first stanza, final line, there not their?

I love it, and can relate. We have Acorn every where, still the squirrels choose the berries and pecans.
