A Poem by Chris Shaw

Dear Dee Dee
How I wish that I,
could grow two wings
and learn to fly. Escape the noise
and all the toys,
the squabbles of my feuding boys.
I miss the days
that we'd meet up,
to chatter over steaming cups
of coffee, in the town's arcade,
or munch on butties freshly made.
What fun it was to bargain hunt.
Both you and I
were full of front,
when trying on designer wear.
We had no money,
did we care?
I picture you in your new life,
the doormat's gone,
no trophy wife.
It would be great to visit you,
a holiday would suit me too.
Away from those I love the best,
but even though I need a rest,
I'd miss the structure of my days,
the school runs and the kids affrays.
Maybe I've lost the heart to fly,
it's all a pipe-dream
in the sky.

I loved this poem for its conversational tone and effortless rhyming. We all relate to this kind of wishful thinking and missing those good old carefree times. What stops us from getting a pair of wings and flying off for a time to relive those days? Usually our responsibilities and our limited resources of energy and time. Yet sometimes, we owe it to ourselves to find that time. I do appreciate the deeper message I read in your words here, dear Chris.

Nice memories of a time you and your bestie made your own fun....and it did not cost a dime! The way you rhyme, Chris, I am just in awe! The words flow and they create a cozy remembrance. Pipe dreams are fun...they get us through the day. Still, if you know how to get in touch with Dee Dee, why don't you plan a getaway with her? Lydi**

Great flow into a wish, a day dream, a fleeting thought that holds hope that one might actually take that flight that most of us don't... but if you can - fly!

You’re most welcome, my friend.
it is so sad when one of two close friends moves away...we don't realize how much we will miss them, until we have to...
and there are definitely friends who give us structure to our lives...if only we did have wings...

I can feel the dichotomous nature of this yearning to go back to freer times. Despite loving family and family life and the safety of its structure. Love the letter nature of this and the conversational, reflective diallogue.
