Sunrise from Gull Haven

Sunrise from Gull Haven

A Poem by Chris Shaw

low sun on the horizon
in slow motion
serenely through dawn sky
dolphins, arched backs
black and graceful
swim in pink deep sea
interspersed with gold surf
don't leave me
don't leave me lonely

I am a mermaid I can't leave my dolphins and whales lonely... nor the sea, nor the interspersed sun... awa! dear Chris, your last two lines haunted me... they leave such a sentimental effect on the reader, like the sincerest, truest most gentlest plea.... an ethereal little piece.

Many a time, I stood on a weather deck and watched the dolphins escort our ship out of the harbor. Sometimes they'd stay with us for a few miles out to sea before turning to go back. More than once, I felt abandoned when they left. While they returned to their home, I was leaving mine. In this respect, your poem has special meaning for me. Certainly, I relate to the feelings you express.

Wonderful use of words dear Chris. I need 10 years by the sea. Your description took me to the ocean and the ending left me with some regret. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.

I agree dear Chris and you are welcome.
Such beautiful, graceful creatures. Have you ever swam with them? Once, just once I had that awesome experience, in the Bahamas. It was one of those things that I'll never forget. Their squeaking chattering, it was almost as though they were talking to me and my girls.

Take care - Dave

Chris,
Interesting that such a scene would make the speaker suddenly feel apprehension. Perhaps the beauty of nature sometimes overwhelms us . . . and we are left devastated? This is magical poem my lady. thanks.

A stunning scene created, Chris. It’s almost surreal...the dark silhouettes in the frothing pink-gold sea. The emotions come through so beautifully. Loved this read, absolutely.

There is nothing like a few days at the sea to relax the mind and the pen. Many a morning I got up in the dark and walked down a beach as the sun rose and turned the sky pink. Never swam with dolphins, but spent an hour or so anchored in a fog while they frolicked around the boat.
The arrival day is always exciting...departure day not so much.

A good write, Chris.

A flight of anything but fantasy: having the time and chance to cloud gaze! Dolphins - and sometimes dragons - arching and pouncing, dancing off and away.. and one watches, feeling more than bereft. Perhaps. Peaceful. A touch sad. Beautiful. Christine.
