A Matter of Trust

A Matter of Trust

A Poem by Chris Shaw

What credence does one hold in trust?
Like gold it gleams, like dust it falls.
Like Humpty Dumpty off the wall.

When broken what a costly fix,
when everything is smashed to bits,
what say you can it be regained?

Once wounds inflicted cause such pain
which festers worse by night it seems,
disturbing sleep, invading dreams.

Can all be salvaged, all repaired?
That crater once it's blown its crust
and hell meets air in love's despair.

Could'st thou drinketh from that cup
or spill its contents and give up?

There will always remain the question if this is worth saving when we are assaulted by broken trust. It hurts a great deal and can't easily go away. You've mentioned good points: Lack of sleep, despair...

Time will tell but sometimes time goes on forever.

You've penned a good poem here, Chris.

Dannnnngggggggggggg. Coming from someone with trust issues- this definitely hits home with me. There’s a song by “NF” called “if you want love”- and at one point the song says, “if you want love, you’re gonna have to learn how to change. If you want trust, you’re gonna have to give some away... why didn’t anyone tell me” And your poem reminded me so much of that song 🤔🙂🙌🏼

A complicated question set in a flowing rhyming poem. Trust is like a cliff face. eroded slowly or subject to fracture and a devastating collapse.

Good morning Chris from a dull and windy West Yorkshire .
My dear Chris, such despair I sense in these words. Broken trust is so truly difficult if not impossible to mend. You’ve conveyed the angst and the questions beautifully in this elegant poem. How much we forget or mend also depends on how vital the person or relationship is to us. Appreciated very much !

powerful and true...I have found in all relationships, once trust is broken the first time, it never really finds itself regained...there is always doubt and it destroys the relationship...
