A Matter of Trust

A Matter of Trust

A Poem by Chris Shaw

What credence does one hold in trust?
Like gold it gleams, like dust it falls.
Like Humpty Dumpty off the wall.

When broken what a costly fix,
when everything is smashed to bits,
what say you can it be regained?

Once wounds inflicted cause such pain
which festers worse by night it seems,
disturbing sleep, invading dreams.

Can all be salvaged, all repaired?
That crater once it's blown its crust
and hell meets air in love's despair.

Could'st thou drinketh from that cup
or spill its contents and give up?

There will always remain the question if this is worth saving when we are assaulted by broken trust. It hurts a great deal and can't easily go away. You've mentioned good points: Lack of sleep, despair...

Time will tell but sometimes time goes on forever.

You've penned a good poem here, Chris.

dear Chris... I trust you are well... is another way of saying
"my life is more than I can bear at the moment" and I trust you will understand".
Betrayal is a very Cruel Word and hurts the most when you trust that a friend will
want to understand... and not jump to Conclusions. Friendship is very Fragile
like fine China and when dropped will never be mended properly. Perhaps softer
words should be uttered, rather than assume the Worst of a person. I suppose that
Compassion is only used for Perfect People who know how to destroy someone with
words. We should not judge another person until we have walked in their shoes.

Dear Fran, thank you fir checking in and sharing your wisdom. All the best.

Your poem encapsulates the seismic pain caused by the betrayal of trust. I don't know if new trust may be built, but my experiences tell me it can never be simply repaired. Once that trust is gone, as you wrote, "like dust it falls" and is gone forever.

You're welcome, I appreciate you too.
Trust is vital in all relationships, but it is most vulnerable in the romantic/marital varieties. When it is breached here, it is indeed a "costly fix." Can it, as is asked, be regained? It's possible, but an enormous amount of work will be needed, for a wound that "festers worse by night" is not easily healed. Of course, as is said, love conquers all. Liked very much the venture into the Elizabethan here.

Every relationship between two people...whether professional or personal...needs to be built on trust. Once that trust is no longer there, the foundation crumbles and nothing can ever be the same again. The emotional pain in this poem is so real. The lines nearly cry! So beautiful. Lydi**

I can relate to this one Chris, it is certainly harder to stay, so easy to spill and go, start fresh, I imagine each circumstance has its limits of what is forgivable and who can judge that but the one who has lost that trust.

What a contrasting profile you paint here for trust... Like gold it gleams and like dust it falls... It's that substantial essence that it holds! If you treat it so purely it is like gold but if broken no value at all. A broken glass can be fixed by any glue but a fracture will be there forever. Same is applicable for mind also. What a truth you shared here with such poignant write...

This one goes right to the heart of me, having been on both sides.
I guess trust is like a currency ...you earn it, you spend it, you save it, you squander it.
And, yes, hell is in the squandering.

How true & quite empowering. Faith and trust and belief be something that needs to be earned with gratitude. And that's how life runs and relations go with better understanding and channel of mindful communication via the threads of hearts - Very nicely written. Looking forward to reading your work, Christine.
