Daydreams Of a Warmer Kind

Daydreams Of a Warmer Kind

A Poem by Chris Shaw

Beyond the blackened silhouettes
of conifers and English oaks,
lie lakes of sunrise in the sky.
A blend of hues in red and gold
spread wide their welcome morning glow.

An upper window looks below
on frost that's caked the shrubs in cold
and bold the barrow's sturdy frame,
half filled with frozen winter rain,
awaits a slow and tardy thaw.

Soon vapour trails appear in pink,
like ski tracks left in open snow
and thoughts of travel spring to mind,
of beaches, heat in hotter climes
and daydreams of a warmer kind.

Beautiful! Your poetry is like a still-life, encapsulating the beauty of things in one particular moment. I think I said it before, but: downright transcendental.

I particularly like the triple near-rhyme at the end, something a little bit Robert Frosty about it (I think I'm hearing woods are lovely, dark, and deep/keep/sleep), but that mind/climes slant keeps it fresh.

:) For you as well, my friend.
Chris - you warm my soul with the picture you paint with your words.
All the remnants of winter melt away as you move us on to Spring and
the promise of beaches and the warmth of summer. So very nicely done.

Take care - Dave

I thank you sincerely, that means a great deal Dave. Bless you for that :)
A little colour in the winter sky is just enough to put a rosy tint over the gloom.
I smiled at the image of your barrow filled with frozen winter rain, mine has been upside all winter and i am wondering if anything has hibernated beneath it's rusty exterior.

a gorgeous day today Chris, and tomorrow being the first day of spring let us hope it continues ..
You do have a talent for word painting natural scenes. The images conjured up perfectly a late winter scene. Yes, let the warm weather come.

So vivid and beautiful and captivating piece of work. The striking imagery makes it a juicy read. It ends with a note that sent me away for a while to foreign lands and places unseen. Bravo, Chris.

Yes . . . I agree with syz, it is like a still life painting (in words). Chris, you capture so well the natural world around you. This reminds me of an old poem by Hilda Dolittle (better known as HD) I was reading the other day.
And, yes . . . was the triple rhyme intended or did it just happen?! And, the 1st and 2nd lines, 3rd stanza . . . very effective. Congratulations.
