Anthem For the Unloved

Anthem For the Unloved

A Poem by Chris Shaw

How bleak the hours pass each day
and bleaker still the longer nights,
for those who live their lives untouched,
divorced from human company.

What tales or photos could be shared
of circumstances, crossroads met
which led to situations where,
best out of mind, best we forget.

For even mists can call at times,
envelop all within their care,
embrace before they dissipate
into the kinder morning air.

To part this world without a friend,
not one to mourn your final breath,
an unmarked loss, an unfelt grief,
such sorrow makes a heartless death.

Ther are far many more than we imagine them to be, through many reasons we couldnt even consider. But even sadder is the fact that in the now, of instant connection, we all find ourself drifting farther away from human contact, despite technology making the world an ever smaller place. We are now surrounded by a sea of strangers, staring at their phones like a pavlov experiment gone wrong. Is it any wonder that some of us check out and bugger off to the north east of hells frozen arsehole to get away from all the pointless noise? I mean, ive heard some people have done just that, and even learned to drive to make a quicker escape. One person I know was in so much of a rush to get away, they hit an ice patch for the first time and found out that car seats are not as absorbant as they imagined they would be. That reminds mr, I must buy new underwear :)
7.3 billion people on the planet and so many feel this Chris. We have definitely wandered far from the path intended.

Sadly, thishas happened to many an old soul, who has outlived their family members and no other soul cares for them, dying alone in a house sometimes for weeks or months until someone complains of the smell.

First off, the title was aces. It drew me in knowing already that I would like this poem. I don't say this often but it gave me chills. You captured the loneliness perfectly especially how the night can make it worse. The dark cherry on this poem was the ending, putting in to such vivid context how death can be worse with no one to mourn your parting from this world.

Honestly, my pleasure!
Beautiful poem and a even more beautiful thought. Being busy in our lives we really never think that there can be some people also who have no one to love and care. This poem not only teaches you to care for others but also teaches you to love and respect your realations. Thank you for giving such a good message.

To die alone. A terrible death. Your words honest and true on a subject. Many shall know. Powerful words and thoughts shared dear Chris.

A very heartwrenching poem, Christine....

Unfortunately such occurrences are happening with greater regularity; the aged and unseen passing away in their homes, unmissed, unmourned and being found much later out of random curiosity. It's a modern tragedy and a side effect of our increasingly busy and self centred way of living. I guess we all should take a long hard look at ourselves and evaluate the way we interact with our fellows. More kindness and less hubris is what we may need.

A hard hitting poem. Realistic, poignant and delivered in a poetic, compact form. Very nicely conceived.

loneliness is lethal and poetry has just confirmed this. brilliant write. no one to mourn your death is the sadness in the poetry. but its reversed as your poem has just shown love to all those unloved and just by highlighting this I think this is a incredible poem.

Brutally sad...heartbreaking really! People do need people and whether they admit it or not, companionship is an integral part of life. Conversations, sharing new experiences as well as memories, smiling and crying. Without all of these, are we even human? Did we even exist if no one notices we are gone? A powerful write, Chris.
