Venus Visits

Venus Visits

A Poem by Chris Shaw

Beyond the view of waning moon
suspended in a pre-dawn sky,
I searched for sequin studded stars.

Alas their presence was concealed,
though near appeared a planet bright
revealed serene in argent light.

The vast and open heavens drew
a crescent smile from sleepy moon
attracting planet's rounded eye.

And there they stayed in harmony,
content to be in company
till daybreak chased the dark away.

I too love gazing at the stars. The moon, of course is a favorite, but for constancy Venus is so beautiful. Having a telescope it is a treat to see both of these far from city lights. I'm treated with the availability of a farmhouse, in the countryside, that lets me see best on the darkest of nights. Your poetry captures much of the beauty I get to see on such nights.

Take care - Dave

Don't ya just love night sky our Chris .. I often go out in the dead of night and just gaze upward .. by the way 'dead' of night is almost a misnomer isn't it .. There's nowt dead about it nor still .. The darkness of it merely provides a pretty canvass against which it comes alive .. Indeed I loved your 'Venus Visits' ma'am :)

I’m so happy to read this beautiful poem that leaves such subtle messages for the reader. Indeed, the brightness of Venus, the evening star, and her togetherness with the ethereal moon are only appreciated in darkness. I also thought of how beautiful the earth itself must seem to a celestial viewer from their vantage point! Such thought provoking poetry is Art! Kudos dear Chris! 💕

ps. star gazing is the mother of sciences and those that figure it out the fathers .. recently watching the constellations i recognize and how they trail across the sky ...it occurred to me figuring out the Earth is tilted on an axis and spins and travels an orbit is how the ancients did it .. its the only explanation for the "movement" of the heavens ... love your poem ..top o' the list!

"Suspended in a pre-dawn sky" has to be one of the most beautiful ways to describe the crepuscule. Such a relaxed and joyous poem!

You're quite welcome.
A celestial beauty of a poem, Chris! The lines flow so easily in gentle scattered rhyme. Darker thoughts seem to haunt at night, but the dawn breaks and things seem a bit brighter. I liked this a lot. Lydi**

Astronomy is awesome! I love this very much! It's so surreal and descriptive! The words flow perfectly and I love the atmospherical setting it gives me. I got lost in here, and that is awesome. Nice work!!!

Whenever I travel to other countries, I get jealous of how much of the night sky they can see, but thanks to my relocation recently, I can see all the little twinkles most of the time now. I call it natures screensaver :)
I was worried for a while that my memory must have been getting worse, but it turns out I just stare at the sky and lose all track of time. :)
Such a calming scene, which you, as always, paint perfectly.
