Scarlet Skirts

Scarlet Skirts

A Poem by Chris Shaw

We count the cost of those we've lost,
their sacrifice, the price they paid.
The blood they shed, our honoured dead,
their hallowed memory will not fade.
So we recall with passing years,
the tears, a stream of solemn flow
and we remember all those deaths
in fields where scarlet poppies grow.

We must remember. Freedom isn't free. Even grand Great Britain stood as one for freedom. We must remember the great men and women who stood for freedom. Powerful and wonderful words dear Chris.

You are welcome dear Chris.
I’m always impressed by the heart that goes out in the UK for the poppies and what they signify. When I was there recently the remeberance poppies and charities were everywhere.

I like the alliteration and internal rhymes. I also like your word choice with “hallowed” and “solemn”.

I enjoyed reading this!

Of course! I didn’t know it was the centenary. Thanks for sharing!
somber and respectful of those gone before ... with our most recent shooting, here in America, i think about ...if it is a price we will continue to pay for our conglomerate failings, to put the Spiritual first .. in our lives and as Nations ... hard not to turn helpless, hopeless and jaded :( the vivid contrast of Scarlet Skirts and blood stained is powerful ... tho this for me, is also about Veterans Day coming up .... it has an overall universality to it as well .. too many innocents .. too many courageous talented gifts snuffed out ...cut short ..lost to us all :(((((((((

Dear Chris,
Very poignant composition! The picturization of the tears flowing onto the field helping poppies grow, gives me the impression of how our thoughts rise and also do rise the Honored Souls!! Very nice!

Beautiful. My child's birthday is on 11/11, 18 this Sunday. Have drummed into her the significance of her birth date. To her generation the Great War is ancient history.
Good morning Christine, hope all is well with you.

Not sure of this rating system, but this is certainly is a splendid poem. Your pace and pitch enrich the work.

The blood they shed, our honoured dead, This line with enclosed rhyme is splendid. We owe so much to those who risk all to make us free and safe, than you for honoring them

Very well written and balanced. Nice pace. Enough with the technical critique. It's refreshing to see people that have an awareness of the great sacrifices who's freedoms we enjoy. Very nice poem!
