Remember Me

Remember Me

A Poem by Chris Shaw

A field so far from English shores
where poppies thrive for all to see.
In quiet moments touched by sun
a call is heard "Remember me".
"Remember me is all I ask,
my task complete my days are done,
my sacrifice to keep you free".

From tyranny no wars are won
for death destroys, brings agony
and sorrow eats at human hearts.
When eyes are blind and minds are set
and tolerance a word that's lost,
just stand, reflect and think again.
The ones you love will bear the cost.

Although I've not been for about three years (because of Covid) I used to regularly go visit the Commonwealth war graves in France & Belgium .. and hope to resume soon in my new camper .. I totally understand the sentiments and maybe the physical feelings that compelled you to put pen to paper and pen this particularly poignant poem Pet .. 💜

Thank you Dawn. The least I can do is honour them in a poem. They gave so much.

That is so true Chris, they gave their life to save us all.
Reminds me of how connected I feel to the loss when I hear in Flanders field. In my home town there are marble plaques with all those that died, in too small lettering as there were so many from the town to give them the space their actions merited. And that town is not alone, all along the length and breadth of the country, you can see these memorials with too many names, reminding us of what we have to be grateful for.
A fitting tribute for the centenary of hell ending.

You leave me with nothing to say dear Chris, how Your words spoke of and to me, only the depths of my heart can tell, this would be with no doubt my most favorite special poem from You, a true masterpiece of peace and love.

100000.../100 if I could.

And remember we must! It’s all we can do. All the tribute we can really give the lost soldiers. Whichever side, whatever cause, a soldier dies fighting for a cause to which he stays loyal to his life’s end. Your words profoundly underline that no one escapes the tough repercussions of war! A very thoughtful tribute, Chris.

Powerful and wonderful words shared my friend. I lost many to war. My friend's brother painted on his fence after he was killed in Iraq. Freedom isn't free. I seen the Europe WW2 graveyards. Make you understand. Once stood great men. Thank you Chris for sharing the amazing poetry.

You are right dear Chris and you are welcome. We must remember the great people.
That first stanza is absolutely amazing to me. I love the imagery and think the repetition of “Remember me” is perfect.

The second stanza I think has a powerful message that is depicted well. I also like how it ends in a rhyme that kind of helps to bring the poem to a close with that strong ending line.

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month....we remember. It was supposed to be the war t end all wars and yet so many have perished in wars since then. Yes, we must think and remember what has been lost before more is lost. Heartfelt poem for Veteran's Day, Chris. Lydi**

Fitting tribute to those brave men who gave their very all: sacrificed their lives by taking the fall. Let pride and honor be the gift we give to those who answered to the call. Thank you for sharing this poignant piece.
