When people give us such mementos as these, they give us a part of ourselves. How precious that part and a treasure for us to cherish always. Tucked away in the Bible, reminding us all our lives that we are, we were loved. Your words made sad and grateful at the same time. Appreciated reading very much Chris!

You're young, don't fret about it. Sentimentality comes more as you grow older Ditzy :)

This is a very touching poem, Chris. I really love this. When we receive such things all the memories we have with them will always remain in our hearts and our minds so even if they are no longer with us, the moments we shared with each other makes it feel that they are alive. Wonderful poem.

Dear lovely Flowers of Eternity, your review so thoughtful. Thank you.
:( so sad .. so well said Christine .. draws me in with me own memories of that battered old Bible ..i congratualte you for using a bit of free verse my friend ;) i think it suites the personal story telling quality of this .. i feel the comfort of a close friend telling me small things of great importance ..and the turn with your friends card touches the hardships of such a situation ... i am old enough to have been there more than once with both family and friends ... so i take a lot of my own comfort from your closing of "eternal sleep" .. a place of peace and comfort for me ;) tho i am doing what i can to keep that wolf away as long as i am able :)))

We look with glee the transition from this to that 'better' place where pain and suffering is no more bit when we see that the time is drawing near we tend not to want to let go of the things of this world. Facing that 'final curtain' becomes harder than we think !

My friend Jen has since died, but she did her utmost to fight off what was inevitable. I think I would be the same. Thank you kindly for your thoughts. All good wishes.
I also have a worn, old Bible in which I keep precious bits of flotsam, like cards, bits of flowers and leaves, and prayer cards from the funerals of loved ones.
This is an old, retired Bible. The one I currently use is a small (6"x9") volume which I can carry with me.
I think that when I pass on, I will ask for the old one to go with me.
Thank goodness for that retired Book; not much will fit inside this little one, I'm afraid!
My original Bible was, unfortunately, lost in a fire in early 1981.
Thank you so much for sharing the story of your Bible and its modern, yet still holy, treasures.
Albert, my paternal grandfather introduced me to Tennyson when I was nine. I have loved poetry ever since but did not attempt writing a single piece until I was 40. It's never too late to try somethin.. more..
