For Mija who wanted to write a poem before she died

For Mija who wanted to write a poem before she died

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

( Written after watching the Korean film Poetry)

"
Soft summer drizzle on your skin,
you sit reflecting life and years.
No tears, though rainfall dews your cheeks,
absorbed in sadness, shame and fears.
These quiet moments, you alone.
A harvest ripened from the grain.
A crop of sorrow gathered there,
stored in your barn of inner pain.
Grey river coldly hurries by,
an empty page, the words won't play
and only drops of heavy rain
will leave their wretched mark this day.
Yet deep within your poet's soul,
your undeserving torment builds.
The feelings that you'll soon express,
about to blast across the fields.
And when they do, that's when we'll see
you've found your voice in poetry.

Mija had such sadness, shame and fear in her and that makes for powerful poetry.
You sketch her with sublime strokes of emotion and empathy and in beautiful rhyming and meter.
"A crop of sorrow gathered there,
stored in your barn of inner pain." ~ I'm awed by these lines....Such awesome poetry!

You ae welcome
Not having seen the film that inspired this poem, I can only comment in a secondary way, but the work's subject seems to be about someone of older years, possibly with an agricultural background and limited education, who aspires to write poetry. The person may have led a difficult life, but is still intent on writing. Writers block is hampering efforts, but there is no turning back, and somehow we know the attempt will eventually be successful. The poet has done an excellent job here, not only with rhyming, but in conveying the sense of courage and struggle.

Just had this flagged up by Lorry. A wonderfully sad poem that flowingly and with eloquence tells the tale of this Korean woman. Must try to see it and will add it to the growing list!

Beautiful poem. I could feel your voice as you wrote this. "Yet deep within your poet's soul, your undeserving torment builds." I especially love this line.

Such an empathetic write, Christine. I definitely have to see this movie after reading two poems about it. When the words can not be spoken, the written word is the only form of expression for some. I am in awe of the meter and rhyme in this poem. Just so lovely. Lydi**

Ah! This is the poem you talked about?

'Poetry' is one movie that would leave an indelible imprint in the minds of those who have watched it. Path-changing.

Your poem espouses the delicate tenor of the movie. Beautiful, melancholic and a tingling sense of pain all through the weave of this craft.

Nicely done, Chris.

Best,
M.

This is an exquisite poem Chris. Beautifully laid with delicate verses and lovely rhyme. You describe this woman’s inner life, experiences and emotions so vividly. We can feel her sadness and see the rain falling on her skin as her life passes by. The last couplet is like the sun breaking through as she finally finds her “voice in poetry”. Spectacular and profound write.

Will do. Thanks Chris.:))
this reminds me of the last days of my dad...had he been a poet instead of an engineer, he would have been sitting there looking for the words to write...it wasn't his style or personality...instead...he just went quietly, and accepting.
he had his own type of voice...so in the end...i wrote for him...hoping i did him justice.
great poem here.
sure related to it strongly.

WOWZA!! This is fabulous. Poetry can be very theraputic. I really started writing the year I got divorced and y died. The great thing about poetry is others reading your can be helpful to them when they see their are others that feel like they do.
