Turncoat

Turncoat

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(An old poem about an old moggie, long gone)

"
This fickle creature nudges me
and weaves between my walking feet.
It's not for love he acts this way,
he prompts me as it's time to eat.

Attempts to sit him on my knee
so I can stroke his thick black fur
have failed. My feline won't respond,
he will not sleep or gently purr.

Not my black cat, there's none of that.
Not all indoors are kept exempt,
It's me he keeps his distance from,
It's me he serves with such contempt.

It does appear his mind is set.
My pet is stubborn, I take heed.
From him I can't expect a thing,
from me, at least he'll get his feeds.

Oh! :)I have never heard that word before.
Thanks Chris!
Cats disappoint at times but I always give in to their furry ball-like cuteness. I reconcile with them quickly. I love this poem about their selfishness and standoffishness. It makes them what they are.

Thank you Dhara. It's all part of their nature. They can't help it :)

Nice rhymes and stanza structure. I like when a poem can be read with or without the rymes in mind as one continuous stream. Cats. Blah. Love your work. CD

Thank you CD. That's good to hear :)
I can totally relate to this poem. We are currently feeding 5 cats (4 that have homes and two that are feral)It's costing my parents a fortune. But we have had a few cats that did gain our trust and move in with us. Had to feed them at the back of the garden and move the plate closer to the door.

Thank you george for your response and sharing as well. I appreciate the visit.

You just have to ignore him for awhile, then he may give you a brief respite from his disdain. But unfortunately it will only be brief. Cats are so weird. I love this look into your life.

I love cats. This little poem is short and sweet. Its straight to the point and almost turns into a little story.

Thank you for checking in Bridget. Your response most welcome.

My cat was always like this. She was the queen of the house and expected a lot from me. Her morsels were always expected. haha

Nice, Chris. :)

Thank you Tim. They rule the roost but we still love them don't we?
I am more of a dog person....
Cats are also ok...but I love dogs... when I used to stay at my aunt's home...I had 5 dogs at home... they would sleep in the house...run around and I was very mischevious would always get in trouble for troubling the dogs .... and then I would get scolding heheh.... all of them passed away.... but those sweet memories remain... it was so much fun...

your poem made me think of them...so thank you :)

Pleased to take you on a trip down memory lane Ardra. Dogs are certainly more loyal. Thank you.

Though I don't especially like cats, for some strange reason they seem to take to me. As you so perceptively point out, cats, unlike dogs, seem to have a streak of independence in them. Yes, you may feed them, but only because they let you do it.

Take care - Dave

You must be special to attract cats Dave. They are normally very aloof creatures. Thanks for checkin.. read more

Your pet cat was an exception, C. I feel cats are wonderfully warm, friendly creatures. Right now we have a Brazilian shorthair (a rescue) who looks like a little panther. We left him at a pet hotel when we went traveling, there every one fell in love with him and wanted to take him home. He answers when we call him or ask him a question. If he thinks I am ignoring him puts his front paws on keyboard and screws up the screen.
