Footprints Left in Sand or Snow

Footprints Left in Sand or Snow

A Poem by Chris Shaw

Far deeper set than those in sand
which mark a path across a bay,
our dearest will not wash away.

As imprints left in dampened grains
soon fade when fickle tide returns
or when the wind sweeps them astray.

On borrowed time, they can not last.
Compare them to the winter snow
which melts when warmth demands it so.

Yet footprints cast within our hearts
cemented smooth with love and pain,
they are the ones that will remain.

You'll see them in another's smile
or in the tears they gently weep.
Who says we go without a trace,
we stay for those whose love runs deep.

Every person is unique, some has a tinge of humour in their personality, and some are serious, then the emotional and and the angry types... But those loved ones surely left a footprint on our lives, and no sliding sand of time can wash those memories, they are so special. What a lovely poem you shared here... Loved it

Last two lines are dynamite!--words which, by the way, make a powerful epitaph.
This piece--as does all your work--leaves its own long-lasting emotional "footprints."
Brilliant, Chris!

Christine -
This is so true - if only those embedded memories were so easy to erase or wash away. Those etched in the heart are there forever, try as we may to forget them. Excellent write.

Take care - Dave

This is really beautiful. I like how the image stays in my head and the imprints of footprints stay behind. It made me smile and even tear a little. The memories of a love not so long ago. Thank you.

Transient as a summer breeze is our physical self, but what we leave behind is indelibly etched.

A lovely poem indeed.

The fourth verse when read aloud, is just awesome! They say the true test of a man's standing with his fellow humans is when he dies. How many mourn him, weep for him. A very inspirational poem with a deep message for those who haven't paid attention to this, the most meaningful aspect of our existence. Thank you for this poem Chris!
