If The World Seems Cold To You

If The World Seems Cold To You

A Poem by Chris Shaw

If the world seems cold to you
on days when sun burns diamond bright
and streams of dazzling golden light
can't raise your shipwrecked spirits high.

When sadness strikes and all around
you hear the sound of birds in song,
yet something's wrong and you can't feel
the cheer these little creatures bring.

Though you attempt with all your might
to climb a mountain you can't see,
depression holds such misery,
its blackness like an endless pit.

In time your struggle and your fear
will help ignite a tiny spark,
you'll fumble blindly in the dark
until a shaft of light breaks through.

So kindle fire to warm it well
and pierce the spell of all that's black.
Take pains to nurture what appears
at first a glint, some scope for hope.

This is certainly a challenging subject to address made triply so from within or from the victim’s perspective. I applaud your courage.

you have more than adeptly depicted the black dog here Chris .. affective disorders are the pits and though two thirds of those who experience one form or another spontaneously recover without any external intervention (first episode, that is) .. the time it takes to do so, can I know seem like an eternity ..

Chris, this most certainly describes depression! I've been there and do hope I never go back! Penned perfectly!

My pleasure!
There is much hope in this poem; for those who are in the dark, with pain surrounding them, who can't enjoy the birdsong or see the glorious mountain top....fear is all consuming, bleak and scary; but if there is a tiny spark in you, please light it up to make fire in your life and enjoy what you can...kindle it and see the light. Thanks for sharing this Chris.

A really great expression to the phrase ?zthere is light at the end of the tunnel." A masterful job you did penning this poem.

No matter how dark the night, its spell is bound to break eventually. It cannot contend with the pervasiveness of light. A message of hope and faith in life and oneself, this was such a reassuring poem to read tonight. Appreciated very much, dear Chris ❤

Depression is so personal it's rarely shared or understood and you just got to hang in there to ride the storm. Excellent piece Chris
