Brief Encounter

Brief Encounter

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(tongue in cheek fun, p.c. brigade go away)

"
Pass the salts, I'm feeling faint,
(I'm not that type just kidding you).
At noon a stranger made me smile,
transformed a day which started blue.

I made my entrance in a room
(in all it could be deemed absurd),
good grief, he stood as I walked in,
poor chap he didn't say a word.

What charm, a man of chivalry,
he offered me his empty chair,
I thought that died an age ago,
he took my coat while I sat there.

I'm grinning like a Cheshire cat,
perhaps I need to re-assess?
Is it too late to change my views
on subjects such as manliness?

I always looked for men with brains,
(found in the head, not sunk below).
These manners which have been displayed
have given me a rosy glow.

I swear ten years have disappeared
without applying nip or tuck.
Now what on earth can rhyme with that?
Ah yes, I know that's where I'm stuck.

So in these days of equal rights,
(I'm really not a hypocrite),
it is refreshing now and then
to play the princess for a bit.

Times have changed indeed and working side by side with men and commanding equal pay and equal privileges as them, women have to relinquish their need to be cossetted or cared for, gently.
Now one doesn't expect roses as much as equal credibility while working and striving out there.
Yet a pleasant interlude like the one described so beautifully here just makes our day.
Now I'm smiling too.

I still find it amazing the various responses when you make a simple action of courtesy.
For some of us, these are automatic reactions.
The fun thing is you can make a person's day!

Way to go, Chris. Most everyone remembers a pivotal brief encounter. You give us is a delightful look at being nice to others no matter the regional mannerisms. You do it with a light touch of metaphoric humor and sophistication. Certain kind people light up our years with some small acts of gentleness and respect like starry twinkles in the night sky. Your story flows well without getting bogged down in wordy detail. That person had a lasting impact on your socialization, showing you how to be a nice person. The radicals have tried to pervert goodness and pride. The good thing is no matter the agenda-driven side of society, there are good people everywhere to restore our faith. I was in the checkout line last week when my credit card refused to cover my small purchase. The next guy in line whipped out his own credit card uninvited and paid my tab. I was touched and I will play that kindness forward. As your story goes, I will remember that day forever.
