Brief Encounter

Brief Encounter

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(tongue in cheek fun, p.c. brigade go away)

"
Pass the salts, I'm feeling faint,
(I'm not that type just kidding you).
At noon a stranger made me smile,
transformed a day which started blue.

I made my entrance in a room
(in all it could be deemed absurd),
good grief, he stood as I walked in,
poor chap he didn't say a word.

What charm, a man of chivalry,
he offered me his empty chair,
I thought that died an age ago,
he took my coat while I sat there.

I'm grinning like a Cheshire cat,
perhaps I need to re-assess?
Is it too late to change my views
on subjects such as manliness?

I always looked for men with brains,
(found in the head, not sunk below).
These manners which have been displayed
have given me a rosy glow.

I swear ten years have disappeared
without applying nip or tuck.
Now what on earth can rhyme with that?
Ah yes, I know that's where I'm stuck.

So in these days of equal rights,
(I'm really not a hypocrite),
it is refreshing now and then
to play the princess for a bit.

Times have changed indeed and working side by side with men and commanding equal pay and equal privileges as them, women have to relinquish their need to be cossetted or cared for, gently.
Now one doesn't expect roses as much as equal credibility while working and striving out there.
Yet a pleasant interlude like the one described so beautifully here just makes our day.
Now I'm smiling too.

How lovely of you to say so Neville. A big thank you :)

Chris
Your delightful poem shows one side of this coin & it's well done! With the me-too movement (which is fully justified & needed) people may be feeling a little too prickly about all things sexy or chivalrous. I've been thinking about writing a little ditty about the good ole days when I myself used to be a bad offender of the sexual harassing kind, panting over guys & even grabbing an a*s now & then. You came up with a twist to this theme that I had not thought about in years -- how nice it is to be treated like a lady. Your poem is especially fun becuz of your seemingly-apologetic (but not really apologetic at all) approach! *smile* Fondly, Margie

Just a bit of fun Margie and I'm pleased you found it to be as well.

:D great read and great stream of thought that must have popped up from a single moment. Your words make me smile. So light and refreshing. I agree being a princess every now and then - there's nothing wrong with that. X

Then you are a true gentleman wordman. Sadly manners don't seem to be that important any more.

hha, Yes, You deserve to play the Princess all the TIME, and that there would be a King who would offer You his chair, even more than this ;)

You are a real sweetheart and in all what You write it is shown, a joy to read You, make me feel again I'm in a middle of a novel, it's a talent of Yours!

Most entertaining.
Who knows, chivalry may stage a comeback.
As far as I'm concerned, we'd all be better off if it did!

I agree entirely Jimmy. I love good manners.

I still do it, offer a chair, offer help and regard women as a man's duty to make sure they can manage everything in their wake. I guess it is my age group that perform in this way but I also get a certain kind of pride out of doing it. Love your type of poetry, rhyming and with meaning. Please keep them coming, look forward to more. Rod.

Thank you Rod. I love good manners.

I love when a man opens my door or offers me help. It's such a gentleman thing to do, and I simply love being a part of it. Sadly though, I do believe it's becoming a lost art, much like kindness to strangers. Such a genuine feel to this that so many of us can relate, Chris!
