A Question of Progress or Maybe Not?

A Question of Progress or Maybe Not?

A Poem by Chris Shaw

Once upon a window seen
where drapes drawn back in softened sheen,
like tresses of a young girl's hair,
to play the early morning breeze.

And sparkling glass, those clear bright eyes
would view a garden and the sky,
in satisfaction that this sight,
delightful be it day or night.

Fair stood this cottage near a wood,
for many years and if it could,
it would without a doubt have stayed
if chance had let it have its say.

But time you thief, brings forth your change,
not always for the best, it's strange
to see destructive forces where
I'd walk and breathe in country air.

Great memories of fields and pastures new. Now turned into housing estates. Sad thou. The modern new house. Is like a little dolls house. So quickly put together. And people placed in them. And the problems so many new house owners get in this country. Is sad. For what bricks and mortar and some windows. And the fields and trees and grass lesson as they expand and grow.

Thank you Dee. Sadly a sign of the times, but at least we have our memories.

this hammers home the point that nothing lasts for ever .. although, it maybe just sometimes seems that it does or might .. whatever the case, a point well made Chris.

Change dear Neville doesn't necessarily mean it's a positive. Some change is a step backwards. Many .. read more
made me think of how sad i am to see houses where i once played in the woods as a young child. time marches on. they call it progress. i yearn for the simpler days of the past. thought-provoking and touching. well-written and flows nicely along. there is sentimentality to this ... :)

Thank you Pete, appreciate your lovely review.

Your poem is written in such an open-ended way, this could describe the way an old cabin becomes tumbledown over the years, or it could describe the way our bodies follow such a downward slope, or it could be a suggestion that the current times are located a considerable distance lower on the chart than the good ole days. I love the way your writing flows with graceful imagery (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

something about this poem touches the heart deeply, the gentle tenderness, Your rhythm and wonderful expressions are soulful almost like soft drops of tears, You took us with You in each of Your moments, the happy and sad ones, from the start to the end, how cruel and sad to see the Nature being destroyed by human's hands...

Thank you, and as you rightly say, some changes are for the better.
The land near where I live was once rural. I recall seeing deer in my back yard. Now developers are turning it into commercial and residential property, replete with apartments and fast food places. As you say, time is a thief.

This poem is metaphorically so deep. Time is cruel. It does not allow anything or anyone to escape it's erosive touch. Appreciated so much, Chris ⚘

It is such a pleasure!
There are marvels, and sadness, in the passage of time. You captured this beautifully in this charming piece.
If I might be so bold as to wonder if sparking glass is sparkling? Or perhaps sparking has a significance of which I am unaware. If so, I beg your pardon in advance
