Spilt Milk

Spilt Milk

A Poem by Chris Shaw

If I ponder ever afters,
steamy loving, days of laughter.
Long and drawn out perfect kisses,
partnered bliss in sheets of silk,
please be honest, please be truthful
are they destined from the outset?
Will they end in total failure,
nothing better than spilt milk?

Are they sad or are they happy,
give and take or mostly snappy?
Do those awkward nasty tantrums
simply need a little fix?
Or are they monumental chasms,
gaping wounds of mass destruction,
torn apart and left in rubble,
once a wall that's lost its bricks?

When I question all those partings
and the tears that cascade freely,
I can see an ocean forming
from the drama and the fights.
Choose with care, repent at leisure,
pleasure doesn't last forever,
haste can bring a lake of sorrow
and a sack of sleepless nights.

Wow Christine, this was truly a well-formed write. You leave the reader with a little food for thought and I can see why it's not worth crying over spilled milk. I love the metaphors in this piece and the way I could relate to all the imagery. This poem has amazing structure and flows nicely. After reading this I know that I need to overlook petty things and avoid the drama that I often find myself drowning in. Cheers Christine for a good poem!

Very nicely done
I haven't see this before and as very nicely done as it is, there is something, possibly too familiar, about those sleepless nights???
Probably just my imagination

Spilt milk can continue souring for a lifetime--even though, most of these
lactic events should just be quickly mopped up and considered lessons learned.
Quite entertainingly, Chris, you make all the right points, as well as offer helpful
warnings.
An excellent piece of work, good poetess!

Well that must make us wise:) welcome
This is a very good poem and brings a good message about relationships and heartbreak. However I think "pleasure doesn't last forever" is subjective. Just as every person is different, as is every relationship. And with good comes bad. Without bad you will never know what good truly is because if everything is good nothing is good. Everything is the same and there's no difference. Not every relationship ends in disaster and heartbreak. Some end in mutual understanding and a clean, even break. Some don't end at all. I find a lot of fights are assessed improperly because of being so invested in the other person and being so emotionally charged which leads to a lot of break ups and heart break even if the person is right for you. Sometimes jealousy and controlling habits and so on are other factors that play in which may or may not be fixed with communication, but because of these things sometimes people don't know if the person they're with is truly for them. I've seen so many couples break up who do truly love each other end up broken up because of a misunderstanding, miscommunication, and misinterpretation. It leaves so many people bitter about love and happiness even though it's completely obtainable if you work on it. Brew, cultivate, and age the love as much as you can in a relationship, it's not rare. It's just like a fine aged cheese, or a baby even. It takes time and patience and effort. I've seen pleasure last until the couple dies, it doesnt mean you're forever happy it just means loving unconditionally and working through the s**t with patience and care.

Very nice, it's well-written. A bit hard to understand but after looking up some of the words, it made sense. There's no use crying over small things.

That's right, don't make a fuss over little fish. There are much bigger ones to worry about :))
I agree Chris.

The above lines. Old fashion wisdom. Patience and silence. Keep the family content. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
