Where I'm From

Where I'm From

A Poem by V.S.L.

I am from curling irons and Aqua Net

From oak trees and acorns

I’m from drinking and high tempers

From Grandpa Marty and Uncle Butch

I’m from loud and drunk

From “We aren’t a family of plumbers”

And “Don’t climb trees in a skirt”

I’m from cups of grape juice and filling them myself

From Florida and Germany

I’m from mashed potatoes and fried chicken

From my sister making over my brother

And the make-up caked on his face

I’m from the scrapbooks and the walls

Tape holding them in place

Keeping me from falling
