“Hey, Krys,” Alice answered her phone.

“Hey, A. Just wanted to let you know that I’m starting my trip.”

“Cool. How long is it going to take?”

“Three to four days,” I informed her.

“What? I thought you were flying.”

“I was going to but I have so much stuff. Plus, I wanted you to see my baby.”

“You have a baby?” She asked, stunned.

“Yeah. She’s a black 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Fastback.”

“Oh. Em. Gee!” My best friend squealed. “How did you get that car? You don’t have that kind of money.”

“I kinda drained my college fund,” I admitted.

“What? Why? You always wanted to go to college and be like a lawyer or something. Why would you do that?”

“College isn’t really for me,” I lied. “I’ll probably just start my own business or something. I’m too smart for college.”

“And your parents are okay with this?” She asked.

“I told you, a lot has changed.”

“I’ll see you in three days. Love you.”

“Love you too,” I said and hung up.

Alice had been my best friend pretty much since we had been born. Our moms had grown up together and then bought houses next door to each other after they got married. Alice’s dad got transferred within his company to Indiana when we were in the fourth grade. She had come back to California to spend a couple summers with me but this was the first time I was going to stay with her.
