City at Night II - Where is Everyone?A Poem by Daniel WashingtonIf it isn't real now, it wasn't real before. So... Where is everyone?Where is everyone? - Street lights shine but aren't guiding the way merely casting a dim light against cars parked menacingly in the middle of the road. - In the absence of sound there is something new not quite silence, but an empty space where noise used to exist. - So, where is everyone? - I wonder if there's a meeting, to which I was not invited windows left open, doors left unlocked it seems the people left in a hurry. - Perhaps something dreadful is coming or something wonderful just left and they followed, tired of city life. - I have the unsettling feeling, even my footsteps are silent. - I imagine couples holding hands and the elderly running scared. - The sight-seers, and night club go-ers all gone, without a trace, nothing to suggest that they had ever been. - The streets are dry, the sky is clear no scuttling rats, no buzzing machinery no single solitary hint of life. - Perhaps our society has collectively grown tired and decided to turn in together a lasting peace caused by an endless sleep - Seriously, where is everyone? - The most frightening question was still to come why am I still here? had they ever been here? have I ever had a conversation? have I ever kissed? or thrown a fist? have I ever laughed at a joke? did you people ever really exist? - Perhaps not, but that still doesn't answer my question. - Where is everyone?
