City at Night I - Skyline

City at Night I - Skyline

A Poem by Daniel Washington
"

Big city romanticism

"
We're at this place through no fault of our own
We did nothing wrong, and we mustn't give in
it's a beautiful night, and you're perfect
And I hope the sun doesn't come back.
The city sprawls and the music rises
The lights flicker and dance in time
to the soft sounds of awe that we make
And for a moment our anxiety abates.
I find few things more beautiful than a city at night
It speaks to me of opportunity
and dark journeys underground
if I'm not mesmerised by a starry sky.
Take nothing for granted, I know
So rarely do conditions conspire
to allow me the company of my desire
and tomorrow I'll likely be alone.
And I'll likely be depressed to boot
If not tripping out or running from my pain
I'll come up to this hilltop
a drink in this view again.
Brightness in the dark of all colours
All different heights, a forest of steel
filled with dark creatures
scrapping in gutters for mates.
Man down a man hole in the ground
Food and shelter everywhere
scuttling around in the dirt
trying to come to the point.
When the sun does return, against my wishes
a whole other creature awakes
and takes the streets by force
it's time for me to hide.
