The Voices quieted

The Voices quieted

A Poem by Caroline B A Maguire
"

Over time I have learnt to live with them...and they with me...

"
They are not so loud now
The voices in my head
Once I feared what they longed to tell me
They spoke in riddles and puzzled me so
Confusion reigned for many years
With it they held the power

Then
Little by little
Piece by piece
I made a sense of the game that is my life
A sense that keeps me sane
And I took back the power they stole
And quieted the babble
So I could hear my own voice once more

The puzzle not yet complete
The story
May not be true
But for now it is enough
To get me through
Today

This is really awesome :) I love the raw power that it expresses. This poem is about taking back your life! And that's so powerful. Really really cool writing :)

I agree dear Caroline. Life is lesson and more lesson. If we are lucky. We gain wisdom and become stronger.

The above lines, I do understand. The hard days make the easy days more appreciated. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry and your thoughts.

Not sure if the voices referred to here are actual auditory hallucinations or deeply embedded fears. Either way, they seem to have dominated the speaker's for a long time. It appears, though, that extended and patient inner work has afforded some degree of control. This is a good sign; once a fear is identified it is more easily dealt with.

We’re gonna be okay.
We all have them, gremlins in the head, saying no when they should be saying yes.
It can be very frustrating, if not dam right annoying.
I think we all find a balance at some point, and if the voice disappears we panic.

one day at a time eh!? just one day at a time .. it's enough for anyone to handle ain't it! ;) the honest vulnerability in your poem is what stands out for me in this one... our heads can babble on and on in endless self talk circles .. finally finding even just a moment of the "quiet spot" ... is stunning in its silence and complete lack of emotion .. i think your poem is universal and relatable .. thanks for sharing Caroline!
