The Birth of the Mountains: A Fable

The Birth of the Mountains: A Fable

A Poem by Carl Teegerstrom
"

I wrote this poem on a long car ride, and I enjoyed writing the poem, but it is very strange, so I am interested to see what you guys think.

"

The earth was once naught but an arid desert;

the many, pastel colors of dust swept into dunes

across the curves of the Earth and beneath

the great dome of her partner: the Sky

who sent his clouds, stars, sun and moon

rolling above his beautiful partner.

He loved Her and caressed her

with the whistling winds,

kissed He with billowing breezes,

and he made love to Her

with the howling, tempestuous wind,

and thus was His love for Her.

But, as the eons passed, she sighed

for the sky was aloof and cold.

Every time He made love to Her,

but She never made love to Him,

He held Her, but She never held him,

and their intimacy waned.

Her resolve increased for each eon

the Sky became colder to her warmth,

and she devised a grand cataclysm

to bring the great Sky to Her,

to win His respect, to love Him.

Thus, she summoned the magma of her veins,

and she gathered her mighty stones.

The Earth conjured parthenogenesis

deep in Her womb, Her belly grew,

The peaks grew from the fiery flesh

of the Earth, rising upward to pierce

the cloudy flesh of Her heavenly partner.

Now the Earth caressed Her husband,

the wind and clouds were trapped

amidst the mountains, and the vaporous mist

congealed into raging storms,

violent kisses of lightning, and climaxing

in an icy downpour smelling of petrichor.

The rain froze in the great heights

of the Earth’s peaks, and the white banks

gathered in the rocky crevasses,

melting into flowing streams and

gathering into rivers, lakes and deep seas.

Thus water flowed from the tempestuous,

passionate love of the Earth and Sky.

Flora and Fauna sprung from the water;

forests sprouted leagues of leaves;

nascent plains bladed vast deserts with grass;

creatures of the fur and feather, fin and scale

populated and colonized the sea, Sky and Earth.

Life was born a child of the Earth and Sky.

The Earth grew more beautiful and radiant

and the Sky grew to love the awesome

power of His partner. The Earth loved the Sky

and their new love grew with their children

as the eons of time rolled by like the

rolling plains, clouds and streams.
