Would It Be Better To Wander Life Blind?

Would It Be Better To Wander Life Blind?

A Poem by Carl Teegerstrom
"

I wrote this poem after memorizing some villanelles for my poetry writing class.

"

Would it be better to wander life blind?

The future's a boundlessly empty sea.

The past falls like thick snow. What's there to find?

When the lovers are in their bed, reclined,

wet with love's sweat, do they ask quietly;

"Would it be better to wander life blind?"

After babes are pushed from their fleshy binds,

and mothers watch them grow, do they not see

the past falling like snow? What's there to find?

When hopeful, young men work and dull their minds,

do they ask in mournful solemnity;

"Would it be better to wander life blind?"

When an old man learns death is not kind,

he desperately sifts through his memory,

but the past falls like snow. What's their to find?

Can one live intensely when one can see

that there’s no bounty in the empty sea?

Snow keeps falling, and there's nothing to find,

so is it better to wander life blind?
