Icarus

Icarus

A Poem by Cari Lynn Vaughn
"

Disillusionment is painful

"

       Icarus

My winged friend you once sold

me the best beautiful illusion

that your heart was mine to hold

that you were sure   no confusion

Together we engineered waxwings

And planned to use them to fly

We never spoke of such awful things

that I could possibly fall and die

You promised me the heavenly sky

Lifting me up toward the fiery sun

For immortality   we would dare to try

From our earthly lives we would run

As our journey took us higher

the heat became too much to bear

melted was the glue of our desire

and nothing was left for us there

Tortured by each searing drop

Our escape was a river of pain

There was no way to make it stop

Not even hope could remain

Free falling through the ecstasy

Your fatal flaws I could not see

Until we’d descended completely

Until your lies became the death of me
