The Curse of CassandraA Poem by Cari Lynn VaughnCursed to know, but never to be heard
The Curse of Cassandra
I have a special power a rarity Wisdom revealed the future I see Apollo saw fit then to curse me And give my words no validity
I have heard in my nightly dreams What may come in the days ahead Still, you say to me so it only seems These are only thoughts in your head
My visionary words are suppressed By skeptics and those in eternal denial As a woman I am even more oppressed It hardly makes the gift worthwhile
I was once frustrated and depressed Seeing only destruction and death Now thoughts are rarely confessed I have learned not to waste my breath
Let them all squabble, bicker and fight Let the story let history unfold as it may Who knows in the end what is truly right The larger plan is not for me to say
Knowing the events of tomorrow Are not half as important you see As understanding your past sorrow And being open so completely
Our destiny, our tomb, our sealed fate Is only locked securely in place When we refuse to think and contemplate When the truth we refuse to face
