Odyssey of LongingA Poem by Cari Lynn VaughnA woman Odysseus goes on a journey of desire and longing
Odyssey of Longing
Leaving behind comfort and safety I journeyed to join in the noble fight Some protested that the war was not right But I knew it was fate calling to me
The injustice of the past demanded my heart So I set out to restore balance and harmony Mending what was once violently torn apart I ventured unknowingly into Poseidon’s angry sea
On the island of academia, I came to grow Caring Calypso gave me the dream of a life A child our literary creation we came to know But this was not home we were not husband wife
Hermes came to lead me far away Water filled my lungs and I nearly died When I came face to face with Circe de Sole The key to this odyssey she in me did confide
In battle, I blinded my mortal enemy I sought revenge and came to pay the price It was I who could not let go could not see My life I gave not once, not twice, but thrice
My adventure then led me into darkness abound Into the underworld that remained inside of me I longed for release from the desire that had me bound So I searched for the God of Emotion of the sea
Tempted by the sirens of passionate desire I succumbed to the emptiness of the years And let myself be a prisoner of Hades fire Strapped in my mind I faced my worst fears
I left my life behind, lost my tragic mortal soul As I found my way home at long last I gave up my foolish pride my precious control I put my endless aching in the past © 2014 Cari Lynn Vaughn |
