Butterflightless

Butterflightless

A Poem by Carey Lenehan

Butterfly with leaden wings
Can't get off the ground
Steep the flight of hovering
Slow the lifted head
Beneath the dark and broken dreams
Hear the thin and silent scream
The sunlit world is dead

No more to fly upon the wind
No more to flutter by
A flicker fades the light within
no longer are you free
Poor butterfly with leaden wings
will perish in its wanderings
And not come home to me
