SecretsA Story by TumTumTree
Secrets are a powerful force. They connect people in terrible ways, winding chains around hearts to strangle and bind down souls.
There was once such a secret, buried deep within a powerful, shiny family. It infected each member as much as it could as it desired to wind down through generations like choke weed. In the brittle mother, the secret was compressed hard and tight in a small steel cylinder trap at the back of her mind. The ball was itself trapped inside a larger cage made from a different, older secret. She couldn't see the secret, such was its power. But the secret grew stronger inside her and until keeping the secret hidden was the most important duty in her life. For him, the secret wasn't really hidden. It was merely tucked away behind a door down a vast, dusty hallway. A place one could enter but rarely did. He did not visit the secret, his concern was that it stayed hidden. But for the girl, the secret emptied out a hollow, endless space. A place magic used to live - all green and blue swirls with sparkling pinks and golds - all gone now. The secret had bored through the magic until all that was left was the dark, empty bottomless caverns. Here and there were fragments left of her childhood: a baby shoe nearly covered in rubble, a post from a crib jutting out from the wall, a bear torn apart and left on the ground. The walls throbbed with the pain of the secret, the ground vibrated with fear. At times wisps would make their way up to the surface and the earth itself shuddered with the hurt that was unseen but known. The three, entangled by secret's grip would forever be tied closely together but always separated by oceans of pain. Silently bound, they fed their lives to the past as they continued to plod soullessly through their present. © 2020 TumTumTreeReviews
