Old clothes and pizza scraps

Old clothes and pizza scraps

A Story by Ama May Cooper
"

To be honest for me this piece is lacking in anything, it seems a little empty and im not to proud of it..

"
I found him curled up in a soggy cardboard box. Fast asleep despite the rain that charged down upon his topless frame. For some reason i wasn't afraid , i felt a strange sense of safety radiating from him. His skin was covered in cuts and bruises and his hair came to rest a mess upon his head. He reminded me of my next door neighbors Labrador puppy only in human form.
"Excuse me" I said
The boys head spun round sharply, and he stared intently at me evaluating me for any sign of danger. I stepped back a little un-nerved, his eyes were like headlamps, big , wild and startling. Id never seen eyes that looked the same way these did, the way they darted from point to point like years of drugs had been pummeled into his blood stream.
"I don't mean you any harm, I just.... well this is my back garden"
The boy cocked his head to the side in confusion, like language was a foreign object to him. He made a whining noise like a dog deep in his throat and then trotted toward me on all fours.
"Hi" Out of instinct i stroked his head, he seemed to enjoy it, after a while he sat at my heels. I wasn't quite sure how to take him, he seemed human enough but his reaction and words well those were the actions of a small four legged animal, not a human. I looked down at him for a while and then decided i liked him and that he could sleep behind my shed as much as he wanted to.
"Hold on a minute, im gonna get you something... its not much but you look hungry"
I ran off down the garden , not noticing him bounding after me his long reptilian tongue swinging excitably from side to side. As the two of us got to the door , he barked sending the fear of god down my spine.
"Ah, What's wrong?"
He'd stopped just before the doorway, as if incapable of coming in.
"It's alright, come on"
He looked up at me, and turned his head to the side again. His eyebrow'd curled around his widened eyes. He looked traumatized, his hair had flopped over the top of his brow and he shivered slightly. It must have been rather cold. An idea suddenly came to me , and without a seconds delay i charged into the house and up to my room.
I opened my wardrobe and began searching for a shirt that had grown to small for me. It was a dark black shirt with a white bird over the breast pocket. I hadn't worn it for years but hadn't be able to bring myself to throw it away. Once id grabbed my old shirt i proceeded to run back downstairs to my new friend who had been waiting patiently on the threshold.
He barked again as i came into view, a friendly bark mind you. The kind my neighbors young labroudor made whenever you stroked him.
"Here" I said as a i clothed him, hoping he'd feel a little more warm and comfortable. Again he stared at me, almost like he'd never been pampered or cared for before and a little smile played across his face.
"You like it then?" I beamed back
Suddenly what i came in for dancing across the back of my mind.
"Come on in...it's fine i promise , my parents are on holiday"
Cautiously the little boy crawled a few steps forward, his tongue practically touching the floor as he walked. His feet and hands left little puddles on the laminate flooring, perfectly shaped hand prints followed by minute trainer patterns. The poor thing was soaked and glad to be out of the rain. He made me laugh, shaking like a drenched puppy, sending water droplets diving all over me.
I smiled, and went over to the fridge. There must be something edible in there i thought to myself. Luckily enough i found a few slices of cold pizza. I wasn't to sure he'd eat it but honestly i didn't have the faintest idea what a half human  half dog being would eat so i settled for the pizza.
Turned out i was right. He ate it right out my hands, he seemed thankful. Poor little fella looked starved bless him. He finished quickly and then charged back outside to the box and curled up. I suppose he liked it there , and i rather liked him there to.
From that day forth id go to the box every morning and play with him for a while, and id always bring him pizza scraps... my little feral boy loved pizza scraps.
