Blood stained protegeA Story by Ama May CooperA young boy caught up in a horrible situation , when he accidently pulls the trigger on his little brother, and watches as events spiral out of control and he succumbs to guilt and insanity.
Alex's hands shook uncontrollably as the gun slipped through his fingers. The last few moments had all happened so fast , too fast and not one of them could be undone. He glanced over the stairwell, hoping against all odd's that his brother had somehow clambered out of the way, but he already knew the mortifying site he was about to witness, would be nowhere near as pleasant. He saw the blood before the body ,spattered across the once baby blue walls, coating them like an abstract art display.
It was all Alex could do to stop himself screaming out loud but who or what would he be calling to.He was a murderer, he'd single handedly put a gun to his little brothers skull and pulled the trigger. And that thought alone terrified him to the very core. He collapsed to his knee's as his eyes came to rest on the 7 year olds blood stained body. This was not meant to of happened, this shouldn't of happened. "The gun wasn't loaded" He sobbed "It wasn't loaded" But of course it was. The lifeless corpse of a once energetic child was proof enough of that. A child who two minutes before was innocently laughing at his idols antics, blissfully unaware of his impending death. Each breath seemed to catch in his throat like thin fingered hands were scrapping it back to his lungs. His stomach curled and he wept much alike a newborn baby entering the world. Alex crawled toward his brothers corpse, and sat just aside him, tears streaming down his face. His hands shook as he lifted little Leo's lifeless body. His body was limp and un-moving, but his eyes were wide , locked un-seeing to some distant point infront of him. "Leo?...Leo..come on little buddy say something" Alex's hands wiped desperatly at the blood stained youths forhead, as if to remove the wound itself. But still no sound was returned to alex's hopefully ears. As the time went on the desperation got worse and worse, he started to shake his little brother , plead and beg with every ounce of strength for some fading lifesign, some reassurance that things would be okay. But Leo was dead, stone cold dead. The bullet had charged through his skull, ripping across the membranes in his mind. His heart had frozen and his lungs nolonger opened. No matter how long Alex shearched nothing but the deceased could hear him, and the deceased can not reply to the words of the living. Alex had been so focused on his brothers body that he'd completely blacked out the curious onlookers. He hadn't heard the screams of shock that left there mouths. Neither had he heard the phone call made to the local police station. All of a sudden Alex felt himself being lifted quite roughly by the arms of a uniformed stranger. "Your coming with me son, we'll see what you have to say for yourself down at the station" Alex came along with no resistance, all energy and power had been drained from him. The image of his distress frozen before his eyes, like a Polaroid etched into the very nerve endings of his brain. He willingly ducked his head below the top of the police car and sat frozen in morbid shock staring at his hands. What had he done? What the f**k had he done?..Tears began to accumulate at the corners of his eyes, making little tracks down his face. Alex had only meant to show him there farther's new gun, only meant to taunt the little one and wave it just out of his reach. Never had he seen it coming that his brother would lay plastered against the wall, with ambulance men noting down the time of death and shoving him into a body bag. He tensed his knuckles to force back the sobs, and glanced around at the crowd that had gathered outside the police car. He heard a sharp tap at the window, and turned his tearful eyes to meet none other than his fathers. "Alex?... Is that you?... What's going on?" Alex couldn't bring himself to answer, how could he possibly tell his farther that he'd not only ignored his warnings of casual gun play but also run a metal object of destruction through his youngest sons forehead. "Alex.. you tell me right now what's going on?" His farther looked suddenly panicked, as if the situation itself was seeping into his head. "What you done son?..what the f*****g hell of you done now?" Alex merely shook his head, it was all he could manage. His farther stormed of somewhere irritated, probably to ask another cop about the incident. And with that small exchange the other officers got back in the car and drove Alex away, his head hung limply, his eyes like waterfalls flooding the river. - Arrest or he gets away and caught later - - In court - Alex had never been good with law, it had always been a subject he'd streered away from and with good reason, he didn't understand it in the slightest. Shaking with the heavy burden that he was carrying he seated himself in the defendants chair. In an instant he could feel everyones eeys scorching holes through every angle of his body. All glaring, sneering at him like he was a common criminal. His thoughts stumbled over the word, 'criminal', but that's what he was, a criminal , a murderer. he had murdered his own little brother. (Suddenly the world seemed to shake and blur slightly around the edges, liek the very fabric of the world had become a distorted. Everything went black and he felt himself collide with the floor, his body no longer within his control. When he came to, a selection of faces peered down at him, very few showing even a hint of concern.) - Verdict guilty - - Jailed - Alex gazed longingly through the wire mesh fence. His fingers curling through the gaps. Charged and caged like a wild animal. He thought back, the whole occurance rewinding in his head. It was like he was back in his dads room again, sneaking around with his little brother at his heels. He ruffled his hair lovingly. "Alex, were not allowed in here, you know dad will go nuts" "It's fine I just want to show you something" By this point his hands were leaping from draw to draw in giddy excitement pulling and yanking at the contence. "But, Alex your making a mess, we'll be in trouble" "Oh, will you shut up" Alex shouted while lobbing a pen at his brothers head, who at Alex's command was silenced. "Found it, wait till you see this" It was that fateful moment that led to his brothers demise, In hindsight his little protege was right. They shouldn't of been in there , he shouldn't of been snooping around. But he had been, and he had found exactly what he was looking for. His farther's brand new Beretta revolver. Alex and Leo's dad was a police corporal in the united states police force. One of the best cpl's in town, constantly in the newspaper for his heroic work efforts and well on his way to a promotion. He was a friendly bloke, handsome and popular within the community. He had jet black hair and these eyes that were like storms. The kind of storms that happen deep out at sea that noone lives to talk about, he had the power to posses your mind with those eyes. Those eyes were like deep blue realms of mind control. Alex and Leo loved there farther, and he loved them. His sons were the apples of his eyes, his little jewels that he thought everyday to make the world a better place for. Alex was always getting into to trouble, he had a explorative mind his mum had always told him, he liked to get his hands dirty. To Alex boundaries merely meant un-explored land and that, that has never been discovered must be discovered by someone. But his mind had done him a great injustice this time, one that couldn't just be brushed under the rug or hidden behind the shelves. Alex's knuckles tensed against the fence as guilt knotted within him. "I could of at least check the f*****g chamber" he thought to himself. But for Alex it was to late for what could of been done, it happened, the funeral was scheduled, his farther wouldn't look him in the eye and there was absoulutly nothing he could do about it. (He's done enough damage already) - More time in prison, working out at the gym, lunch, emotional experience - - gets out on parole - - Brothers Funeral - "I know alot of people don't want me here, and im certain most of you don't want me talking either. But I knew Leo better than any of you so don't deny me that privaledge, I f*****g loved him as a brother and as a best friend. i would never intentionally harm a hair on his head. Now i have to live without him knowing it was me that pulled the trigger that stopped his heart, so please. Im begging you, isn't that enough, I never meant for this I love him. He was the smartest seven year old id ever known, funny as anything. I remember just this time last year I'd just broken up with my girlfriend, and he must of heard me crying. His little face in my door way his head tilted to one side, which he always did when he was thinking about something. Alex are you over a girl? He'd asked me cause if you are you shouldn't , you should stop crying and come play outside with me instead, cause football is better than girls. He paused for a bit expecting me to answer, i just looked at him and smiled. What else could i really do. Then he just walked off back down the stairs and back outside to kick the ball against the wall until i came downstairs. Leo was so innocent, gosh and he wasn't half a taddle tail bless him. He was always with me through everything. I used to call him my little protege, he was little Leo and nothing will ever replace him, nothing will ever remove the guilt and hatrid for the day he died. And im sorry , im so sorry little brother, If you can hear me please forgive me and believe me when I say I didn't know it was loaded. I love you kid, I f*****g love you. I brought you something, you know, those pokemon cards you were always stealing off me , we i went to the shop the other week , I was saving them for you birthday. But .... well here little buddy" Alex threw the pack onto the open casket before breaking down into incoherent sobs and wails. He sat by his brothers body all dressed up in a little suit. He looked almost peaceful like he was just sleeping and could stur any moment. Alex reached forward to brush the hair from Leo's eyes. © 2012 Ama May CooperAuthor's Note
