Human beings

Human beings

A Poem by Ama May Cooper
"

A rather depressing poem about the life of human.. lol well i do have a habit of writing very morbid poetry but all the same here it is

"

Human beings

We are more fragile than the butterfly its wings a delicate tool

that if touched become incapable of working with the same precision

we map out our surroundings as if blind, feeling along walls with our fingers

searching for traps that would lead to our damage if missed

We are more fragile than a faint whiff of freshly moan grass in the summer

A faint breeze removing tainted breath as if the mower had never cut it

we breathe in the smells around us turning away from those that displease us

running when the smell of death lingers thick in the air

We are more fragile that the fluorescent paint splattered on the wall as a tin can fell off a lader

easily removed by a bright white paintbrush, like some sort of magic rubber

we watch every movement of those around us from the corners of our eyes almost as if scared

that at any moment something might snatch away our last few minutes of life

we are more fragile that the gentle tweeting of a baby bird daring its first and last flight

tumbling slowly to its contact with the hard ground

we hear the echo's of voices as we walk through busy streets

aware of the noise but not of the precise words that left the peoples lips

we are more fragile than the taste of a single drop of wine, so sweet

savoured but will never last forever

we devour our food leaving our taste buds to decide

if we have just taken our last meal

we are emotion flung loosely around on a word that has lost its meaning

latching on to the hearts of one another

it slows one beat at a time

finally tiring of life's constant hounding

we study like many before us, collage and university our final steps on the chain

each coursework, essay filled in and filed inside our heads

its light slowly fades from behind our eyes

and the many cells begin to shut down

the rhythm that follows are very existence, from foot falls on the pavement

to our delightful displays of musical talent

the blood in our veins slowly freezes over like a giant ice age inside us

no longer reaching those organs we call vital

the heavy panting of an 800 meter runner, or a baby tired from crying

the snores of those who's breathing becomes difficult as they sleep

we call to our loved ones as they lay us down for our final rest

our last life sign slowly puffing out, through shaky breath our last words

and there we lay, under 10 feet  of soil no longer warm no longer living

telling noone the tales of our lives

this is what becomes of us the change of decomposing matter, all things must die

change sucks. change hurts. change is now.

Fragility is our most endearing trait for it makes us aware of our transient nature. As for death, well, it need not be a thing of morbidity any more than birth. We come to this world helpless, crying in a puddle of blood but we do not remember that fear. But we live our entire lives in the shadow of the fear of death; when, if we only return to that place from which we came; the mind of God or the Spirit of the cosmos, we should have nothing to fear. I really enjoyed reading your piece. I found it most intellectually stimulating and well written.
