Drowned specter's , Forgotten souls

Drowned specter's , Forgotten souls

A Story by Ama May Cooper

Before me the sea unfolded, its dark murky waters extending far out past the horizon.  I could hear the screams of the forgotten souls long since choked beneath its waves, calling out desperate warnings to the boats trespassing on her lonely presence. She was beautiful, beautiful in the way a succubus is a maiden of desirable doom. My farther had been one of her many victims, a water sodden corpse that had merely sunk to the endless depths never to be found again. From that day forth I had stood on the cliff edge alone staring out across the sea hoping to see my fathers’ boat sailing back to shore despite the tattered wreck that had slumped upon the bay the following morn. A terrible storm had raged across the island the night the boat vanished from sight, and a blood curling crack rung out through the crash of the waves as the wooden vessel  tumbled beneath her lunging hands, the whole village had heard. The whole village knew, and so no great fuss had been made merely the planks removed and the cargo stashed away never to be spoke of again.

The sea called out to me , reaching for me like specter among the moon dust. Beckoning me over the edge and into its deathly spray. It roared like a beast sensing its next meal as i grew weary in resistance.

As much as i admired the looming mass of water, i deeply feared it. My family had been known for slipping into deep water and then being whisked away by the unrelenting tides that possessed it. First my mother had been fishing in the shallows in the early evening glow, when she had been enticed forward. The glimmer of the blood red sunrise caving an elegant and beautiful path atop the waves. It called her, and i understand that. The waves had lavished on her a loving comfort that no human, no man or woman could give her, that only its great god like being could express. She merely followed its calls, treading past the shadows and leaving the safety of the shore side, treading further out until she broke from her captivating entrancement to deep to ever get back.

Apparently people had spotted her carcus from miles out, returned to us within the hands of her suffocater. Floating limp and lifeless onto the sandy shores to be basked in tears and heartfelt goodbyes of common villagers.

Oh i understood with a painful panic as i felt my self teeter over the edge of the cliff, i could not move or struggle otherwise. My feet had merely followed the ghostly calls of the seas. The whispers of the long dead calling for some company beneath the waves. I had been mistaken there words were not of some cautious warning, there words were what the warning should have been for. The rolling monotony that dragged you in along with it , one step at a time like a wave lapping over the edge of a landmass. Inching its way further up , dragging with it the organisms not strong enough to withstand the flow. Calling to the land dwellers to lay beneath its gentle depths and choke willingly upon its being.

My resistance returned to me to late for safety, my arms flailing uselessly as my body plunged beneath the depths.

Winded in an instant force of pressure, blinded. My lungs ruptured on impact, the sea's flooding through my gasping throat. I reach out for some sanity this beautiful elegant being a dark and dangerous threat. Her liquid fingers crawl around my neck squeezing me of my vital oxygen, denying me a strangled breathe of air as my last moments loom.
