My Children as this Autumn Unfolds

Graceful Doe

    dignified and cautious

    impatient of folly

    and sure of step,

Looks out across the valley

    choosing between wheat and chaff

    as certain of her choices

    as the sky is blue.

Others watch her, curious

    but not too close

    unless she bids

    and they are honored.

Now she lays in a half circle

    prepared and gracefully waiting

    protected and fullfilled

    at peace with child.

Enters So Sweet Mama Two

    Bambi's friend from years ago

    smelling roses

    serving tea and singing.

She wins the ribbons at the county fairs

    accepting sweetly, blushing

    everyone cheers

and brings cookies to the picnic.

Children gather 'round her

    dancing, gaming

    bidding privaledge

    until she growls.

Now she gathers

    stores up for winter

    lays out the comforts

    to settle in with.

And Running Deer stands tall upon the threshhold

laughing at the error of man's ways

    a pun here, sarcasm there

    amused and amusing.

The pack gathers

    for his tales of color

    of worldly wanderings

for his great strides carry him far.

"Did you know?," he asks

    bcause he must share

all the bits of wisdom he's accrued

    and all that he's devised.

And now, as wounds heal

    he runs against the wind

    smiling, head high, forward

    we watch amazed.

So where is So Dog Gone Cute this evening?

Asks So Sweet Mama as she wrings her paws

I cannot keep up with him at all now

then, "Boo,"  from out of nowhere, here he is.

We hold our breath

    and then relax

    but only so far

and then, again, surprise, he grows some more.

Still, make no earthly err about it

as surely as he'll scare you half to death

he would face the force for you as surely

and might allow a moment to catch breath.

Now, he sneaks around the forest undetected

    watching packs of bucks becoming

and as he tries his own stride

    we watch in prayer.
