SpeechlessA Story by nevershoutnever.Hehe!
"Riley," I said, motioning him over towards me, "Can I talk to you?"
With a blank expression, but a hidden twinge of a smile, he said, "Sure." Kaitlyn, his current girlfriend, started to follow. I stopped in mid step and Riley looked at her, "Be right back, Kaitlyn, I promise." Smiling, she left us alone together. Finally... I thought. "So," I said, unsure how to start. We walked around the campus and I led us to this giant oak tree whose orange and yellow leaves were gliding to the ground. I plopped down, leaning against it's trunk. Riley stood there awkwardly until I patted some dirt next to me. He rolled his head back along with his eyes, but laughed with me. "So . . .yes?" Riley asked, obviously curious to why we were here. My mouth hung open, stalled, for a little before I said, "Wow, Riley, you are such a little manwhore!" I chuckled at his shocked facial expression. His pudding brown eyes told me that he found the joke funny. The way his milk chocolate hair curved out, behind his ears as his mouth formed a small "O." "You heard me, Supler! Can't just settle for one, huh, Riley? Morgan . . .Becca . . .Me . . .now Kaitlyn!" Riley's smile started to fade as he and I both realized my tone was becoming more and more serious. "Yeah . . .haha . . ." He spat out, when a really cheesy, toothy grin - totally sarcastic - came onto his face. I leaned up and crossed my legs to look at him. "Riley, okay, look, I'm pretty sure I got it stuck in my head that you still . . . I don't know . . . like me." He looked down, but I continued, "I know this is really ridiculous, but can you just . . . look me in the eyes and say, 'Julie, I don't love you anymore.'" Looking into his eyes, he stood up. I couldn't afford to break the gaze I'd long for so I rose too. "Okay, Julie, wait," Riley began, "I ca-" "Ri-ley! Riley? Are you do-ne yet?" Kaitlyn called out to him. "Just another minute." "Oh-kay! Hurry up, though! I miss you!" She yelled. Riley looked a me. His footsteps echoed through my ears as he took slow and steady steps towards me. Lightly touching my face, Riley pulled me in and stared into my eyes. "Julie," he said, "I can't." "Please . . ." "No." "At least tell me why not...?" "Because I would only be lying to myself if I said that." And then he left, leaving me just as speechless as I was to begin with. © 2011 nevershoutnever.Author's Note
