The Time Is Now

The Time Is Now

A Poem by Candice Stanfield
"

Written from the experience of attending a graduate-level psychology course that focuses on group processes in the here-and-now and encountering one another in a genuine and forthcoming way.

"

In a time when people strive to get by

They do not live in the present

The here-and-now, they will not abide

So how else are we to know?

Where we stand,

Are we accepted?

In a rut we’ve built ourselves

Walled up in petty talk

A muddled pool of our former selves

An echo deep in the well of our past

As future accelerates - neck-breaking nigh

Yet, we need not fear

For fear is only a symptom of non-disclosure

A symptom of the unknown,

Or living disingenuously

Combatting such folly comes with effort

The reward everlasting

An encounter of the sincerest kind

Cracking and gnawing at our shackles while we listen

And pull ourselves out of the murky depths

Perspective and insight await us in the here-and-now

So hear my words, and I’ll hear yours

As we contemplate without judgment -

Our souls become weightless,

Flowing freely like smoke arising from a cleansing fire

Built by words shared in the present

The time is now, this time is ours

The title made me think of a song, "The time is now, and it's right for you..." I can't say I grasped everything in this poem, but I can certainly embrace the idea of forthright, honest communications. In fact, it's the only kind I want.
