Mocking BirdA Chapter by Candice M Tolbert-HoenstineThis is one of the chapters in my book Never Saying Goodbye
As tears formed up in her eyes, she asked the Nurse Becky to please get Dawn and bring her to her waiting, nervous arms, she silently shivered, but she was not cold …….. Becky left the room and stopped in the hallway, put her head down, she wanted to cry but knew she couldn’t her patient and her best friends daughter was in that room fighting to stay alive long enough to bond with her little girl, she shook her head and started to walk to the nursery when she arrived there stood her best friend Joyce Elise Hunter staring into the window where the babies born to early or had problems starting there lives the NICU Unit held many ghost of sorrows, Becky knew this all to well as so did Joyce they lost there children in this same Hospital, tears started to well up into Becky’s eyes as she walked up to Joyce and wrapped her arms around her and whispered “I am sorry “, Joyce turned to her with red eyes and nodded, Joyce felt it was time way before Becky came to her, she felt it like her very life was ceasing to exist, hell it was, she was loosing her only child, maybe not by blood but nothing the less Karen was her little miracle and every chance at life now she was loosing her. She turned around from the window, straitened her back, shoulders and lifted her head high, she needed to be strong for her daughter and her daughters little miracle ….. for now! Becky went into the nursery while Joyce gathered her strength, she opened the incubator, checked the babies vitals, her heart beat, her breathing, she was shocked, this little five pound, eight ounce, ten inch little baby girl was strong, healthy and breathing on her own, so she disconnected all the machines and waited ten minuets to make sure she didn稚 need to be on the machines before she handed her over to Joyce, after tapping her foot and checking her watch every second holding her breath she sighed a breath of relief , this baby will be okay , she quickly bundled up Dawn in a cute pink blanket and put a tiny pink cap on the babies head that had a white bow on the side, then walked out of the nursery with a smile, Joyce knew that smile, she knew this baby would make it, she knew for being so tiny she was a fighter like her mother, Becky handed the baby to Joyce and shook her head, Joyce smiled and walked with the baby back to Karen's room, she took a deep breath and faked the joy her daughter so much needed to say her goodbyes, and walked into her room. Karen darling, I have your bundle of joy waiting to be unwrapped she lightly laughed, Karen didnt laugh, Joyce looked up from the baby into her daughters eyes, the pain, the sadness and the unknown haunted her daughters beautiful blue/green eyes, she wanted to scream, cry and curse this is so unfair so wrong God why? But she had to hold it together for now ,yea just for now ! Karen looked at her mother and at her baby without any words she reached out to her mother to put Dawn into her arms this one last time, all the sudden the heart monitor started beeping real fast, then real slow then skipping beeps and then back to normal.
Joyce held her breath and her tears as she listened to her daughter say her Good Bye’s to her baby, then Karen started to sing….… Hush little baby don’t say a word Mama’s going to buy you a mocking bird and if that mocking bird wont sing Mama’s going to buy you a diamond ring. If that diamond ring don’t shine, Mama’s going to buy a looking glass… then she went silent. Joyce was looking out the window as her daughter bonded with Dawn, then she heard the the heart monitor stop beeping, then heard it screech that eerie long sound when the heart stops beating. She started to cry when she rushed over to her daughter to grab Dawn out of Karen’s lifeless arms, she stood there in disbelief as Joyce stood there frozen, Becky and Dr. Blackburn rushed in, they called to another Nurse in the hall, Paige please get Dawn and Joyce out of here, Paige ushered them out into the hallway as she listened to Becky and the Dr. yell out orders and for more help, she slowly shrinked into the wall beside her daughters room then slowly sank to the floor holding Dawn tight as if she was a lifeline and bowed her head and cried. Dr. Blackburn was yelling orders to Becky, then she was telling one of the Nurses to grab the crash cart stat, then three other Nurses rushed into Karen’s room with crash cart in tow and other medical supplies, the last thing Joyce heard before the last Nurse went in and shut the door was Dr. Blackburn yelling paddle stat and the machine charged then shocked her daughters lifeless body. Joyce slowly lifted herself from the floor, she had to get out of this hall, away from the death of her daughter, she knew she passed, her heart felt empty and her soul cold, she quickly ran with Dawn in her arms to NICU Unit and sat in a chair in the waiting room and rocked the baby as she cried.
