The Enemy in the night

The Enemy in the night

A Poem by Carissa Marie

You, who fills this endless void,
With the whispers of your voice;
You, who visits me frequently,
As thousand suns,
And thousand moons
Have come and passed-
You appear and disappear
As seasons change,
And the moments pass;
You, who comes to me
With the mask of a friend,
You cling to me
And crush me,
Leaving me breathless-
Gasping for air;
You seek me from time to time,
Keeping me company,
And yet I know not of your name,
Nor your face,
But your scent.
A sweet-smelling scent,
That leaves a foul taste in my mouth,
And I know it's you.
Because you who comes to me,
Within the shadows of the light,
It's only you who has the scent-
Of the enemy in the night.

I like this a lot . . . It has a mystery woven into it that I can fill in with my own experience. I like the theme of the enemy behind this mask, the way the poem lures me also into into thinking this is a friend - "a sweet smelling scent that leaves a foul taste in my mouth", and the way the poem communicates the visitations over years, like you can never shake free of it.
