Poetry Dump #7 (Beautiful Tragedy)

Poetry Dump #7 (Beautiful Tragedy)

A Poem by Carissa Marie

It's the dawn of a new day.
I hum along to the song of the birds,
As I turn a page of the book we have left open
Two years ago.
It seems appropriate to move on to a new chapter now.
We had stretched the last few pages of our story
Too long for our own liking.
I have read and re-read these old passages,
Over and over again.
I have it memorized and tattooed on my mind.
You told me once,
That we were like characters from a novel
Whose love lasted the test of time;
But you were wrong.
We were not an example of a happy romance-
We were but a classic and beautiful tragedy.
I tried so hard to change the genre of our story
But it was written in a permanent ink
So our sad ending could not be erased.
If only I could rip these unhappy pages,
If only I could tear your name out of my life-
I would.

If I could go back to the days where our story was not yet written,
I would have chosen not to be the lead of a tragedy.
Maybe then, as I turn to a new page and a chapter in our book,
I would be the one to be with you as the last sentence reads,
"And they lived happily ever after."
