FreebirdA Poem by Carissa MarieWe had carved our names into an old oak tree one summer day. We had marked our love that we thought would be eternal. Your hand in mine, as we scratched the strong bark away. We were young and passionate, And our love was a free bird flying with the wind. We sat beneath that tree, locked in an unbreakable embrace. Your kiss upon my temples, was a promise- A silent assurance of eternity. --- I am now tracing our names with a knife in my hand. I am allowing myself to feel the whispers of your touch for the last time. The lines that bears your name, I imprint within my heart. We had marked our love within this tree, When our love was a free bird that could not be caged, But you have flown away to fly with the wind, While I had been caught and tied. It had been a while since you've flown away. But with this knife, I'll cut down the rope that binds me. If I hack away this old oak tree, Would you look down upon me? If I mark my temple with the permanence of our names- Would you again fly away with me? I'll lay down beside you now, underneath our oak tree- Let my blood be the ink that marks us in history. The rope that binds me had been dissevered- Now fly with me love, Fly with me.
