Unrequited

Unrequited

A Poem by Carissa Marie

What happens to those who loved,
But fell into the illusion of being loved back?
Do they suffer from the hunger,
By being deprived of the affection that they crave?
How do they quench their thirst for reciprocity,
If their hearts are returned to them empty?
Do they dream of fairy tales at night,
Only to wake up to a tragedy?
Who would believe them if they say,
"I am happy",
When concealed anguish is painted in their tear-stained faces,
As their body slowly crumbles into exhaustion.
Where do their spirits go,
If the pieces that they gave away were wasted,
But was never to be returned to them again?

Would they choose to live once more?
Or would they be forever broken -
Drifting away until they find
Pieces and shards of the love,
That would make them whole again?

Ah the pains of unrequited love. You have captured the heartbreak and yearning in your words. I hope that they would be whole again. Touching and beautifully written.
